I am thrilled to be back with you today to share my latest project: a swiss cross coffee table.

As I mentioned in my last guest post, my husband and I bought our first house this summer, and we’ve been taking our time furnishing it. We committed to waiting for the perfect table, chair, lamp, etc to fill a space in a room instead of buying something mediocre just to fill the void. When it came to a coffee table, I wasn’t thrilled with any of the options I was seeing in stores, and so our living room had a very large blank space in front of our couch. . . for months.

On one of my weekly Goodwill trips, I spotted a desk with great bones at the Fishers’ Goodwill. The stain was too dark for our color scheme, and there were small spots of paint splattered all over the desktop, but I couldn’t get past the potential!

Knowing the size was perfect for our larger and square living room (we tried a normal size coffee table and it looked dwarfed in living room), my husband tackled trimming the legs down to coffee table height (17 inches) while I laboriously sanded the whole table down to the original wood. The result?

Now the coffee table was ready for paint. I decided to paint the base and legs Sherwin Williams Bohemian Lace white, and I used a white wash approach by diluting my white paint with water (1:1 ratio) for the top of the coffee table. After letting the paint dry for 24 hours, I cut eight swiss cross templates out of contact paper (it’s what I had on hand!) and traced the templates onto the table. Using a paintbrush, I applied two layers of white paint (not diluted) in the swiss cross template outlines. And to seal the table, I used a MiniWax Polycyclic, letting it cure for two days before moving it into our living room.

Are you ready to see the swiss cross coffee table sitting in my still-in-progress living room?
